This final chapter of IO’s ‘World of Assassination’ trilogy that began with 2016’s Hitman might be better thought of as an expansion than a sequel. If you’ve bounced off Hitman before – particularly in the last five years – know that there’s been no big reinvention of the bald bloke’s blueprint in Hitman 3. The interface and controls have remained consistent in their stiffness, and the range of uses for your weapons and items aren’t drastically different, either. The most notable new toy in Hitman 3 is a camera which can be used to hack or examine switches and items, which is handy but not really a game changer.

The beauty of Hitman 3: It’s all about mastery, all about taking the tools you’ve used in the first two chapters of this trilogy and leveling them up. Square Enix’s reboot of the classic Hitman franchise concludes with this final chapter, and it doesn’t focus on introducing any new mechanics. Instead, it builds on everything that you, the gamer, have learned before, challenging you to use the game’s existing mechanics in new and deeper ways. It’s a masterclass in letting a gamer appreciate their mastery. And if you love stealth gameplay, once you start this, you just may never stop. That’s especially true too because of the multiple platforms where you can game. Hitman now lands on Nintendo Switch as well, with the game sitting on a cloud server, much as it does on Google Stadia. This proves fluid on Switch, meaning a new audience can appreciate the title.

The progression system is largely unchanged but has been tweaked a little. Completing challenges within a level will award points toward a destination's mastery. Each mastery level achieved will provide some type of unlock, be it a smuggle point, unique starting location, or weapons and gadgets. Missing from "Hitman 3" is a one-sheet that shows players everything they haven't unlocked and how to obtain it, but the classic challenges are more streamlined than previous games and should make unlocking some cool gear a little more straightforward. The post-mission screen will also give players a playstyle rating, which is a unique title the game assigns based on the actions taken in the previous mission.

If there’s one thing that the World of Assassination trilogy has made a name in, it’s offering in-depth sandboxes across beautiful worlds. If that’s what you’re craving out of Hitman 3, you’ve come to the right place. Rather than looking to add intricacies to its sandbox, Hitman 3 opts to go the route of not fixing what isn’t broken. That works very much in its favor, as what the Hitman series offers is fantastic in its own right. Instead, IO Interactive focuses on the sheer detail of its worlds. The previous two Hitman games do this very well, but Hitman 3 takes it to a whole other level with some beautiful setpieces and a brilliant atmosphere.

What is here, though gives you plenty of satisfaction, thanks to the usual suite of additional elusive targets and other additions that push you back into levels you’ve beaten. If you haven’t played the first two Hitman games, definitely don’t jump into this one, because there’s much fun to be had before you reach Hitman 3. Start at the older (and likely cheaper) games, and build some mastery.
